In the Beginning:
I got Shiva in September 2009 from a small time breeder in Webster City, IA. My friend heard an advertisement on the radio: "Siberian Husky puppies for sale, ready to go today", so after he got off from work we went and looked at the puppies. There were two left, both girls. One was black and white, and the other was all white. I had been eyeing the black and white one, but when they let the puppies out so we could see them, we realized something wasn't right about her. she had a limp, which needed treatment by a vet, and an umbilical hernia. I decided to get the all white pup, even though at the time i didn't really like the all white coloring. September 2012 will mark three years since I brought her home for the first time. Shiva has grown into a beautiful, graceful dog.
When Shiva was a puppy, she was very ornery. She would pick fights for no reason and hoard all the attention for herself. As she grew older, and had her first litter of pups, she has calmed down dramatically. She has a very laid back demeanor now, she likes to jump up on top of the dog house and just lounge. She always wants to be pet, but she won't be obnoxious about it. She has a very atypical personality for a husky, as they are generally very energetic, outgoing, and sometimes can be defined as 'crazy'.
Shiva absolutely HATES getting muddy or dirty. After it rains, she refuses to walk around on the dirt so she doesn't get her paws all muddy. She will jump from patches of grass to pieces of wood just to keep clean. If one of the other dogs jumps on her or paws at her with muddy feet she gets ANGRY! It's almost like she knows that she has an all white coat, and it looks nice when its clean.
Shiva is a very slender dog, naturally. It doesn't seem to matter what kind of food we give her, she stays at her usual weight of just around 40 pounds. She is also a very picky eater - almost bird like. She only likes "this" kind of food, and if she can't get it, she probably won't eat. Most days I am lucky if she eats at all, she has an unusually low appetite - this is also a husky characteristic, especially in the summer.
When Shiva is pregnant, we feed her a mix of Taste of the Wild (any formula), and two different good quality puppy foods (such as Exclusive brand and Diamond Naturals brand). In the food we mix in chicken bits and chicken stock - we boil up a bunch of chicken and use the meat and stock directly from that. No salt, no artificial anything. She loves it! Sometimes she will even eat three whole cups of food at once - and then eat another bowl later in the day.
